Visiting Auschwitz concentration camp is a must-do in Krakow. There is always the temptation to book with a tour operator to visit the amust-see destination, and I agree that the ease of having someone puppeteering you is useful for large groups, but let me tell you that you can visit Auschwitz concentration camp for half the cost and just as easily, and here’s how.
Krakow’s public transport is both simple and cheap. The MDA bus station adjoins onto the train station and the Galeria Krakowska. You can purchase a 14 PLN (~ £3) single ticket from the ticket booth located on the lower ground platform, and by simply asking for a ticket to Auschwitz concentration camp. The coach will drop you directly to the museum, and return coaches are every 30 minutes for which you can pay in cash for your return journey directly to the driver.
Contrary to popular belief, Auschwitz concentration camp is actually free to visit without the use of an “educator”, however even if you intend to solo it, it’s recommended you book a visitation slot online to guarantee your visit and beat the long queues. I highly recommend booking a guided tour in your chosen language which costs 45 PLN pp (~ £9).
While there is a restaurant on-site before you enter the museum, it’s worth picking up some snacks as the visit including travel time will last approximately six hours in total. It’s also advised that you take a small bag, as any bag larger than 30cm will need to be place in the secure luggage hold for 4 PLN.
So there you have it, even with the guided tour your visit will only cost you £15. And with most tour operators charging upwards of £30 per person, I’d say it’s worth considering using the public transport.
